The laurels describe its own genus of evergreen shrubs or small trees within the laurel family, which can grow up to fifteen feet high. By naturalization, the real laurel is found today in Central Europe, as well as in Asia and America. He was associated with fame and victory in the ancient Roman Empire, as his Latin name suggests. Common to all laurel species are bright deep green leaves with a pronounced midrib and dull green underside. As a spice plant in our latitudes, only the real laurel is used, the highly aromatic leathery leaves are of narrow and elliptical shape, have a wavy edge and appear sharply pointed at the ends. They are about ten inches long and a few inches wide. From the elongated yellow or white flowers sitting in tufts, the fruits develop, which appear in the summer as shiny and deep black little balls.
The bay leaves can be harvested independently of season and unfold fresh or dried their fine aroma in stews and soups, if they are boiled long. Its slightly sour-bitter taste is particularly suitable for hearty meat dishes, broths and marinades for fish and meat. The real laurel is also known for its medicinal properties, because it alleviates allegedly as a tea infusion of leaves or as an essential oil a variety of different ailments.
